looks great. love those buns of steel. also loving the circular alpha insets. those are alot of fun to look at. i also like the nice blend between hard and soft materials. i hope i can do something this cool in zb someday soon. bravo!
--RUS--: Полагаю нет смысла говорить "круто" или "отличная работа", или еще что-то - ты итак это уже знаешь, поэтому просто буду ждать новых работ, выполненных очевидно профессионалом. --ENG--: I suppose there is no need to say "cool" or "great work" or smth - you are already know that. So I just will be wating a new artworks, designed by the professional no doubt,
well u know i can't say that i've mastered this armor and form inventing thing but i think i know some basic stuff that u should stick to while inventing and concepting first of all is a silhouette this is super important u can make a character a vehicle an armor part or smth else but u must always keep in mind that this thing should have nice dynamic and challenging silhouette if yr model has a great silhouette u can be 80% sure that your finals will be cool.
silhouette designing is all about practice, watching and learning when u see any cool model that u like u should ask yourself some qestions like: What makes this thing look cool? What is my favorite element on this model? What are the week points in this design and things that i don't like? all this helps you to define the cool silhouette(design) and the ugly one but as i said before all this is about practice even if u'll watch 100 000 images and answer all the questions in one day u won't became a master of form u just forget all this in about an hour the idea is to live that way and after some time u'll just understand what should be done in order to make your design looks cooler
second one is the details don't try to put some extreeme level of details to all parts of the model the best thing when details work as an accents People say that u should have some detailed areas as well as some large forms in order to balance with the tiny details I can add that when u designing the details try to have some kind of tension and rythm in them... sounds creepy but i'll try to explain watch this guy here [link] notice that he have really detailed areas(stomach area) and some rather undetailed(shoulders, upper torso) as for the rythm and tension notice how all the cuts and details are made they are not just a simple staight lines they have some life notice how one form aligned to the over and yeah one more thing try to made some layers in your design when all your details laying in one plane it's probably will be a boring stuff try to add some height defenition between the details (u can see this at the shoulder armor for example thay have some kind of edging that extruded higher then the shoulders itself)
and the last one try to give your details some kind of a function not just you know some random stuff it's pretty hard i know but it's one of the best things to make your design work
Im trying to get into the gnomon master class hopefully for free, since I cant afford it ;/ He will be teaching there I believe, for a while during the master classes.
I think I know what you mean about designing, I agree, silhouettes and thumbnails can really give you a great start at a good design.
I think that in my attempt to do something completely original, I stop myself dead by being weary of creating something I think of because I can relate it to a design that has been done before. A bit too critical perhaps?
Part of my focus is familiarizing myself with maya now, since I do know a little about zbrush.
I want to thank you for not being like so many other great artists by ignoring my question or saying "Oh yea sure I'll write ya back soon" (And never doing it). There is a lot of artists who honestly, are stuck up and rude. Thanks for being different. I look forward to your work, it helps inspire me to progress and persevere.
hah sounds great hope I hope u'll get to this master classes
well as for originality and things that has been done before don't be afraid of such stuff u know it's not about doing some stuff that nobody ever seen before it's more about some fresh view on the ordinary things that all people know besides if u do smth brand new there is a high chance that people won't understand it(i'am not trying to say that "new" things are bad) remember the gears of war u have such things as double barreled shotgun u can say smth like "hey wait a minute it's a future or some kind of joke? what in the name of god this crappy thing is doing here?we have a nice guns such as lancer we have a hi-tech flyers and APCs and we also have this old school double barrelled shotgun wtf? if u say so while playing GOW try to remember mass effect2 maybe it's just me but u know i can't recognize any gun in that game they all look the same i can say that it's a pistol or a sniper rifle but i can't distinguish one pistol from another or a pistol from the smg they tried to make them as much hi-tech and futuristic as possible and they look so but all this guns lost their connection to our modern weapons and u just don't recognize them at all As for GOW their pistol design are much stronger just look at these things [link] [link][link] u'll never get confused with them they are all different u can recognize a revolver and a kind of automatic pistol they are different thay look different they work in a different way and there is no somthing brand new here they all have bullets magazines and all this stuff that we have in our modern guns it's just some fresh view on them...i hope this make sense
no problem u know i'am digging in all this stuff too so a few words about this helps me too in order to u know regularize all this thoughts. Thanks 4 yr comments hope i was helpfull and good luck with designing!!
You are soo right, and after reading that ^^ I realize I should've known/thought of that myself, like I forgot it for a bit there ;/
You can't be TOO original or something becomes nothing anyone can relate to. Same thing goes with any design really. You can't make an alien creature, for example, that really makes an impact if it doesn't have any recognizable forms (Head/limbs etc). Though yes, in the infinite possibilities of the universe, a completely unrecognizable alien form may exist, it doesn't necessarily "work" when its not .....familiar at least.
Having played through both GOW / ME 1/2 I toally know what you mean. I found myself unsure of what gun I had equipped or chose, and had to read the description to know since they were very cool LOOKING designs, but a little too unrecognizable. Regarding Mass Effect that is.
